Biography and Writings of Individuals.

Alcuin of York. We know Alcuin as churchman, this describes him as mathematician.

Alfred the Great. A comprehensive overview of the life of Alfred the Great.

Anselm of Canterbury. The Internet Encyclopedia of Philosophy on Anselm of Canterbury. Anselm also appears in the Catholic Encyclopedia. You can read his essay On the Existence of God in the Medieval Sourcebook.

Aquinas, Thomas. The Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy on Thomas Aquinas. Aquinas also can be studied at the Catholic Encyclopedia.

Asbury, Francis. Victor Shepherd's life of Francis Asbury appeared in Fellowship Magazine. Interesting site is Francis Asbury watercolors, which tells his story through paintings.

Athanasius of Alexandria. Icon of Athanasius. Athanasius On the Incarnation.
From Anglican Resources a biographical sketch of the life of Athanasius. Encyclopedia Britannica's life of Athanasius appears at Christian Classics Ethereal Library.

Augustine of Canterbury. The Mission of St. Augustine of Canterbury is thorough.

Augustine of Hippo. The Catholic Encyclopedia's biography and assessment of Augustine. You can also read the Augustinian Rule online.

Bach, Johann Sebastian. Baroque Composers and Musicians has a bio of Bach. The J. S. Bach Home Page has a full site of pages for the composer.

Backus, Isaac. Because of his influence on the U.S. Constitution, Backus is often featured on the web. Baptist Cameos has a short biography of Backus. The Baptist Page also features Isaac Backus, son of their denomination.

Basil the Great. A Prayer of St. Basil the Great. A lengthy article on Basil the Great appears in the Catholic Encyclopedia.

Baxter, Richard. A full length biography of Baxter with links to other resources and books.

Bede of Harrow. Anglican Resources has a page on Bede.

Beza, Theodore. Philip Schaff devotes a chapter to Theodore Beza.

Boniface (Winfrith). Of course, there is the Catholic Encyclopedia account of Boniface. From the Medieval Sourcebook comes St. Boniface and the Conversion of Germany.

Brainerd, David. Missionary to Native Americans.

Calvin, John. Calvin's Five Points with pages summing up his life, character and last days.

Carey, William. The Baptist Page, as you would expect, presents a portrait of William Carey. Wholesome Words tells the tale of William Carey -- English Baptist Missionary to India. A sixteen chapter life of William Carey, Shoemaker and Missionary by George Smith.

Chalmers, James. Wholesome Words has a short biography of James Chalmers.

Clement of Rome. Anglican Resources has a full page on Clement of Rome.

Columba. Adamnan's life of St. Columba appears in the Medieval Sourcebook as does Columba's Rule.

Columbanus. Medieval Sourcebook has a Life of St. Columbanus by brother Jonas. Catholic Encyclopedia also has a fairly extensive article on Columbanus.

Comenius, John Amos. Moravian Roots of the covenant churches has a short biography of Comenius.

Cranmer, Thomas. Victor Shepherd's life of Thomas Cranmer appeared in Fellowship Magazine.

Crosby, Frances "Fanny" Jane. Fanny is honored at the New York school she attended:Fanny Crosby, American Hymnwriter. For a longer biography of Fanny Crosby click here. For the texts of many of Crosby's hymns, visit cyberhymnal.

Cyprian. Catholic Encyclopedia has a lengthy article on St. Cyprian of Carthage

Hildebrand (Gregory VII). Sketches of Church History presents the life of Pope Gregory VII.

Innocent III. Catholic Encyclopedia has a lengthy article on notable Innocent III. Popes through the Ages also carries a story on Pope Innocent III. Patron Saint Index titles their article Pope Innocent III. The Medieval Sourcebook has his Summons to a Crusade, 1215.

Judson, Adoniram. The Baptist Page covers the life of Adoniram Judson, Baptist mission hero. Wholesome Words has World Wide Missions Biography.

Kempis, Thomas á. Catholic Encyclopedia has a full article on Thomas á Kempis. Read his Imitation of Christ in a new translation.

Lewis, C. S. Many sites cater to interest in apologist and fantasy author C. S. Lewis. One of the best known is Into the Wardrobe. Another is Narnia. Or look at C. S. Lewis, 20th Century Christian Knight.

Livingstone, David. Wholesome Words on the life of David Livingstone.

Lull, Raymond. A short profile of Raymond Lull.

Loyola, Ignatius. Loyola University has a short Life of St. Ignatius. Or read his famed Spiritual Exercises.

McAuley, Jerry. A readable life of Jerry McAuley, founder of the first U. S. rescue mission.

Melanchthon, Phillip. 500 Years of Phillip Melanchthon. Read his Augsburg Confession.

Moody, Dwight L. The Life and Work of Dwight Lyman Moody from the pen of Wilbur Chapman.

Muhlenberg, Henry Melchior. Virtual American Biographies takes a good look at Muhlenberg.

Nestorius. The Catholic Encyclopedia has a fairly extensive article on Nestorius. To read a blast against Nestorius, see Proclus of Cyzicus's Against Nestorius. The Epistle of Cyrus to Nestorius appears at Christian Classics Ethereal Library. But for a recent attempt at rehabilitation of the bishop, see the Lynching of Nestorius.

Newton, John. The author of the hymn Amazing Grace is well represented on the web. To get started you might look at Wholesome Words' account at John Newton; English hymnwriter of Amazing Grace. The complete Olney hymnbook that he and Cowper compiled is available through Christian Classics Online. Fire and Ice has indexed many of Newton's letters has excerpts from many of his letters.

Nicholas, St. St. Nicholas, Discovering the Truth about Santa Claus. A colorful site with information about the real St. Nicholas and customs associated with his remembrance world wide.

Origen. The Internet Encyclopedia of Philosophy has an account of Origen. Or read the Catholic Encylopedia's Origen and Origenism. Peruse a Letter from Origen to Africanus.

Palestrina, Giovanni P. Giovanni Pierliugi da Palestrina is a zippy account.

Paton, John. Wholesome Words presents a biography of Pacific island missionary John Paton.

Patrick of Ireland. Life of Patrick of Ireland. Or for an account in his own words, the Confession of St.Patrick. Also, his Breastplate in two versions.

Paul, Vincent de.Vincent de Paul, helper of the poor. The Patron Saint Index has a short biography of St. Vincent de Paul with some of his sayings.

Ricci, Matteo. Read Ricci's comments on Chinese government. Chinese Cultural Studies offers Matteo Ricci and his Contribution to Science in China.

Sattler, Michael. Martyrs' Mirror Michael Sattler.

Slessor, Mary. Mary Slessor, missionary biographies, worldwide missions. Dundee library features the daughter of their city, Mary Slessor.

Studd, C. T. Wholesome Words offers C. T. Studd, Missionary to China, India and Africa.

Tertullian. The Tertullian Home Page is easily followed and thorough.

Tyndale, William. William Tyndale, Bible Translator, Reformer and Martyr is a lovely site.

Watts, Isaac. The Psalms and Hymns of Isaac Watts can be viewed in full. The Anglican Resource Collection devotes a page to Isaac Watts.

Whitefield, George. The Essential George Whitefield includes links. This Letter from George Whitefield to John Wesley shows that Whitefield considered Wesley mistaken.

Williams, George. Sir George Williams and the YMCA. Or George Williams and the Central YMCA.

Williams, Roger. The Roger Williams Family Association's basic Roger Williams biography.

Wycliffe, John. Anglican Resources offers John Wycliffe, Translator and Controversialist. The Christian Hall of Fame has an article on Wycliffe. The Medieval Sourcebook has the text of his Condemnation by Gregory XI. Read John Wycliffe on the Sacrament of the Communion.

Xavier, Francis. Catholic Encyclopedia's article on Francis Xavier. Catholic Information Network has another brief biography of Xavier.
