he masterful oratory of what American preacher profoundly influenced Patrick Henry to become a great orator and patriot? What American minister succeeded Jonathan Edwards as President of Princeton University?

The answer to both questions is Samuel Davies (1721-1761), Presbyterian minister in Virginia whose ministry was part of the Great Awakening in Virginia and included slaves as well as plantation owners.

A man of literary talent, Davies also wrote poetry and hymns; his "Great God of Wonders" is still sung today. His mother named him Samuel because she wanted her son to be dedicated to the Lord's work. In later life, Samuel Davies wrote a friend that God's prompt answers to the prayers of a Christian mother accounted for the most important blessings in his life.
