t's a chapel now, located beneath a Catholic hospital. But in ancient times it was a prison where faithful Christians were held in Lyons, France, during a horrible persecution in AD 177 under the Stoic philosopher Emperor Marcus Aurelius.

There was a series of disasters--floods, fires, pestilence--and the populace demanded the sacrifice of Christians to propitiate the gods.

At left, the cell where 92-year-old bishop Pothinus was brought and died two days later. It is only 3 feet high and he couldn't so much as stand up.
