What is Dietrich Bonhoeffer doing standing at the driver's door of this car?

 

Bonhoeffer visited America in 1930 and wanted to learn to drive, but he flunked his driver's test three times. His friend Paul Lehmann told him he just needed to slip the examiner $5. Bonhoeffer refused and preferred to go without his license.
