Why in January of 1077 does King Henry IV, Emperor of Germany, stand barefoot in the snow in penitent's clothing?
Henry and Pope Gregory VII had a bitter dispute.
Henry is pleading for absolution. The pope was in no hurry to see him. Henry
got his forgiveness but in 1080 helped create an antipope against Gregory.
