aybe we shouldn't ask, but...

Why in January of 1077 does King Henry IV, Emperor of Germany, stand barefoot in the snow in penitent's clothing?

 

Henry and Pope Gregory VII had a bitter dispute. Henry is pleading for absolution. The pope was in no hurry to see him. Henry got his forgiveness but in 1080 helped create an antipope against Gregory.
