Here are some facts that may help you break simple ciphers

  1. The most frequently used letters in English are e, t, a, o, n, r, i, s in that order.
  2. The most common doubled letters are ll, ss, ee.
  3. Other common doubles are oo, dd, tt, nn, rr, bb, ff, gg, mm, pp.
  4. The most frequently used words are the, be, of, and, a, to.
  5. Two common four-letter patterns are atta and esse.
  6. A common pattern at the end of a word is ttle.
  7. The most common two-letter sequences are th, he, an, re, er, in, on, at, nd, st, es, en, of, te, ed, or, ti, hi, as, to.
  8. The most common reverses are er/re an/na on/no es/se ti/it
  9. The most common groups of three letters are the, ing, and, ion, ent, for, tio, ere, her, ate, ver, ter, tha, ati, hat, ers, his, res, ill, are.
  10. More than half of all English words begin with t, a, o, s, w.
  11. More than half of all English words end with e, s, d, t.
  12. This rules do not hold true for very short quotes, or for special cases such as "The quarrelsome queen had a quirky quaint duck that quacked quietly."
